I mwbaFalangeriformi (mwbqPhalangeriformes mwbgSzalay, in Archer (ed.), 1982) sono uno dei tre mwbwsottordini in cui viene suddiviso l'mwcaordine dei mwcqDiprotodonti. Le specie del sottordine sono note anche con il nome comune di opossum australiani o mwcgpossum (per distinguerli dagli “opossum” delle americhe), o cuschi. Il sottordine comprende 63 specie di mwcwmarsupiali nativi di mwdaAustralia, mwdqNuova Guinea e mwdgSulawesi. Secondo analisi mwdwgenetiche, la sottofamiglia mweaPetauroidea fa parte del sottordine mweqMacropodiformes.cite-ref-1[1]

Descrizione

Tutti i Falangeriformi sono dotati di lunghe code. Il loro rappresentante più piccolo, l'opossum pigmeo della Tasmania (mwgqmwggCercartetus lepidus), ha una lunghezza testa-corpo di 7mwgw cm e pesa 10 g, ed è la specie più piccola dell'ordine dei Diprotodonti. Quelli più grandi, i cuschi orsini (genere mwhamwhqAilurops), possono superare i 7mwhg kg di peso.

Biologia

I Falangeriformi hanno generalmente mwiqabitudini notturne e almeno in parte mwigarboricole. Tutte le specie vivono in habitat forestali, e alcune di esse si sono stabilite anche in ambienti urbani. Da un punto di vista alimentare, si va da mwiwerbivori od mwjaonnivori generici (come il tricosuro volpino, mwjqmwjgTrichosurus vulpecula) a specie specializzate nel nutrirsi di foglie di mwjweucalipto (il petauro gigante, mwkamwkqPetauroides volans), mwkginsetti (l'opossum pigmeo di montagna, mwkwmwlaBurramys parvus) e nettare (l'opossum del miele, mwlqmwlgTarsipes rostratus).
